Bartlett (バートレット,Bātoretto?) is one of the Twelve Celestials in SaGa Scarlet Grace. He is the Celestial presiding over commerce and also the one who built the Imperial Road, which connects most regions across the world to the imperial city of Azhuacan. He is the patron deity of travelers and merchants likewise he is of all thieves. After all, Celestials do not distinguish between good or evil.[1]
His holimont is never seen in-game, although Diemazu's Protector appears to serve him as well. Orville in the Southeast Boundary mentions that the crested ibis is Bartlett's sacred bird, so it can be assumed that his holimont is the bird the player can see by interacting with its shadow near the Blue Hole and the resting place of The Confounder.
His constellation appears to depict a figure resembling a wheel alongside a shooting star and his elemental affinity is Aes.
Bartlett is portrayed as a young man of fair skin and blue-ish hair. He's depicted wearing a brown suit and covering himself with a white cloak. He's also depicted wearing his iconic silver sandals and his helm which is said to grant him invisibility. His divinity symbol appears to be a golden rod adorned with various golden urns and a scale on one end.
Personality[]
As Bartlett never appears in-game, nothing can be really said about his personality, other than perhaps he was a quite persistent and cunning individual.
Etymology[]
Bartlett has a quite interesting origin in both his appearance, role and most specially his name. First of all, Bartlett's role as the god of commerce took inspiration from the Greek protector and herald god Hermes, whose sacred birds were the rooster and the crested ibis. Hermes was also said to wear sublime sandals that granted him inhuman speed and a cloak that conferred him invisibility. Later, Hermes was assimilated into the Roman god Mercurius or Mercury, who was said to be the god of commerce. Lastly, Bartlett's name comes from one of the crew members of Project Mercury's Mercury 7, namely from the middle name of astronaut Alan Bartlett Shepard Jr.
Story[]
All Stories[]
Bartlett is mentioned by the protagonist's partner when performing the pilgrimage of Marchiam Yaxart. According to old tales, Bartlett only likes gold dust as offerings as supposedly this was the very first offering people gave him.
Minstrel's Tales[]
Southeast Boundary[]
Long ago in the tallest parts of a waterfall in the southern limits of the world, used to live a talking raven that used to call itself the "Lord of the Earth". So, Bartlett journeyed to the world's end to face it, donning his two most precious treasures: a helm that granted him invisibility and a pair of flower-scented silver sandals that granted him the ability of flying.
Face and visage to be unseen, he approached the fiend, yet betrayed by his sandals' scent, his legs the beast had began to feast. Crying in pain, Lord Bartlett struck the fiend for three nights until, at last, the fiend plummeted into the waterfalls.
And so, Bartlett lost one of his silver sandals, while the raven's plead for legs has continued even to this day.
