The Blackworm (玄蟲,Kuromushi?) is one of the Sublime Spirituals from SaGa Scarlet Grace. Along with the Phoenix, the Blackworm surfaces for the first time in a long while after sensing dangerous changes in the world's Spiritual energy and the impending resurrection of the Firebringer. Unlike the Earth Serpent or the Phoenix, the Blackworm appears to be incapable of meddling directly with the humans without having a receptory vessel; for this it chose the wanderer Sasha as its vessel to traverse the world.
The Blackworm is a major character of the Scarlet Shards Scenario, making appearance each time a shard is to be destroyed. It can also be fought depending on the choices made according to the protagonist.
The Blackworm appears to Urpina through its vessel: the wanderer Sasha, searching for an individual to help her in the quest of locating the mythical Scarlet Shards in order to destroy them to avoid the resurrection of the Firebringer. The Blackworm can be fought if Urpina resists handing her Ibex Ring during the midgame variation of the scenario; or during the lategame variation when Urpina chooses to ally with Adill.
The Blackworm is mostly unpresent in Leonard's story, and even faces an odd fate unlike in the other protagonists stories. Whatever harmed its vessel, Sasha, to the point of collapse also seems to have freed the woman from the control of the Spiritual. Without a vessel, the Blackworm appears to have been captured by the Holy Republic and then placed in Inferus Azhuacan for who-knows what reason. After Leonard acquires entrance to Inferus Azhuacan, the Blackworm can be fought by freeing it from its prison in the northeast part of the map.
The Blackworm performs the same role of destroyer of the Scarlet Shards as it did in Urpina's and Balmaint's stories. During the course of the scenario, it is revealed that the Blackworm was using Sasha as its vessel to carry its mission. If the Scarlet Shards scenario was not played at all, the Blackworm appears trapped in Inferus Azhuacan for some reason, where it can be optionally fought; this is the only way of fighting against the creature during Taria's story.
The Blackworm performs the same role of destroyer of the Scarlet Shards as it did in Urpina's and Taria's stories. It can be fought either by progressing through the Scarlet Shards subscenario, or by finding it in Inferus Azhuacan's northeast corner.
