The Earth Serpent (大地の蛇 Daichi no Hebi?) is one of the Sublime Spirituals from SaGa Scarlet Grace. The Earth Serpent is a being that suddenly began appearing ever since the Fourth Calamity, likely meaning the world's Spiritual energy was undergoing a disturbance and that a change was nearing.
Story[]
Overview[]
The Earth Serpent is one of the main characters of the Earth Serpent Scenario and Urpina's initial scenario, appearing as a recurrent miniboss through its lesser forms and being fought lastly as its true form―the Earth Serpent Lord (大地の蛇のヌシ Daichi no Hebi no Nushi) but only during the lategame version of the scenario for anyone other than Leonard.
When the Earth Serpent appears it has to be defeated to progress through the scenario, with sometimes having first to deal with its Earth Golems before the serpent appears. For anyone other than Leonard or Urpina, the Earth Serpent has to be defeated where it first appeared after acquiring the Emperor's Saw in order to clear the scenario or to allow entry to Urbs Azhuacan to face the Earth Serpent Lord, when the scenario is played during the lategame.
Urpina's Story[]
The Earth Serpent is one of the main enemies during Urpina's initial scenario. It initially appears in Provincia Rhonicum shortly after Maximius started his march to reach Urbs Azhuacan in hopes of reestablishing the old Empire. The sudden appearance of the Earth Serpent marks also the beginning of Savnok's resurrection through a series of plots by his followers.
The Earth Serpent sows chaos all over the region through its army of sentient Earth Golems―soldiers made of black clay―eventually reaching Silmium and forcing Urpina to run away while her brother Antonius withholds the control of the city. Thus Urpina decides that reaching for her father was the best way for quelling the invasion of the Earth Serpent, and so marches toward the old imperial capital.
Earth Serpent in Azhuacan
After Urpina reaches Urbs Azhuacan she finds her father and soldiers of the Holy Republic fending off the invasion of the serpentine foe. The Earth Serpent is repelled and retreats, while Urpina is tasked with bringing the Emperor's Saw, the only weapon capable of harming the Earth Serpent, and so she makes return to Silmium in Provincia Rhonicum. Back in Silmium, Hilda―Urpina's stepmother―reports of the kidnapping of Antonius by a shady group who was also seen carrying the imperial weapon. Urpina chases the group all the way to the Mare Ilfee where she learns of the nearing resurrection of the Infernal Savnok, who was apparently robbing the Earth Serpent of its power. Depending on Antonius' state here the story branches:
If Antonius died: Urpina reaches the nearby Provincia Thracini where she learns of a way of rebuilding the Emperor's Saw. The true Earth Serpent emerges but is invincible, forcing Urpina to gather the materials to build a new Emperor's Saw in order to defeat the Spiritual. After the saw is rebuilt, Urpina fights against the Earth Serpent Lord which was being controlled by devices made by Savnok, freeing the creature of the Infernal's control and thus impeding the resurrection of the Infernal of Disease.
The Earth Serpent Lord emerges
If Antonius is alive: A brainwashed Antonius under Savnok's control breaks the Emperor's Saw and forces Urpina to press on to the nearby Provincia Thracini and to the Northeast Boundary where she gathers the materials to rebuild the imperial tool. Urpina is tasked with travelling to the nearby Provincia Termina to rebuild the Emperor's Saw, where the stolen energy of the Earth Serpent fully revives Savnok. Antonius is rescued and Savnok is defeated, supposedly putting an end to the Earth Serpent's rampage ...but on the way to her home, Urpina is greeted by the true Earth Serpent, the Earth Serpent Lord, which was being controlled by devices made by Savnok. The Earth Serpent Lord is freed from Savnok's influence and so its rampage finally meets an end.
Leonard's Story[]
The Earth Serpent in Provincia Rhonicum
The Earth Serpent is fought as a recurrent miniboss irrelevant to Leonard's story. Defeating it is not mandatory, but by doing it in Provincia Rhonicum the player can recruit Urpina.
Taria's Story[]
Earth Serpent Lord in Inferus Azhuacan
The Earth Serpent appears as the focus of one of Taria's possible scenarios after clearing the initial Phoenix scenario. Most of the events are carried out as they did in Urpina's story, with the exception being that Urpina is kidnapped instead of Antonius. It is revealed that Marigan was absorbing defeated lesser Earth Serpents in order to increase his powers. The Earth Serpent Lord appears in Inferus Azhuacan during the lategame version of the scenario, acting as a final resort by Savnok and Marigan to stop the advance of Taria's retinue.
Balmaint's Story[]
The Earth Serpent also appears as one of the main enemies for Balmaint's possible subscenarios. Just as with Taria, the events of the Earth Serpent are developed the same way they did in Urpina's story, with the exception being that Urpina is kidnapped instead of Antonius.
