Hawke (ホーク Hooku?) is one of the 8 main protagonists in Romancing SaGa and its remake Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song. He was born in the Coral Sea and can be found in Uso.
He is voiced by Unshou Ishizuka in Japanese and by Gerald C. Rivers in English for the remake.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
Hawke's clothing is noticeably simpler than the rest of the main cast's outfits, wearing a blue bandanna that covers his long black hair, a small goatee, and a white shirt covered by his distinct blue tunic. He wraps bandages around his forearms and wears a white belt.
Hawke was radically redesigned in Minstrel Song, in which he sports a turquoise striped hat and tunic, brown boots, very long hair, a much longer goatee, and a braided beard.
Personality[]
Hawke is shown to be quite a proud captain. Instead of joining Butcher, Hawke decides to fight against his overwhelming crew, claiming Butcher's suggestions for the pirates would ruin them. Despite his gruff exterior and choice of lifestyle, he maintains a civil demeanor when talking to others, such as when he addresses other party members for recruitment, rarely using typical pirate lingo except for times when he's fired up.
Story[]
Captain Hawke is a famous pirate from the Coral Sea. He and his crew (Guella Ha being his helmsman) sailed aboard the Lady Luck. At Pirate Coast, he challenged Butcher, his rival who wanted to drastically change things for pirates. Upon arriving, it turns out the battle was just a ruse to sell out Hawke's location to the Bafal Empire. Enraged, he returned to Pirate Coast to challenge Butcher, but most of the pirates sided against Hawke, chasing him away. With nowhere else to go, he eventually got caught in a storm and ended up shipwrecked on Walon Isle.
Later during the "Pirate Invasion", the quest unfolds differently for Hawke than other characters, as the fight against Butcher starts as a 1on1 fight, Butcher then getting his crew to help him, and a turn later Hawke getting his team-mates to rejoin. After Butcher loses and escapes, the player has the character specific option to get a ship from the harbor, and chase after him, displaying a unique video sequence for Hawke, followed by another fight against Butcher. Whenever the player beats Butcher here, or leaves the harbor never chasing after him, does NOT influence the ending at all, and it remains the same either way.

Battle[]
Hawke is a rather odd character. He has the high HP and Vitality growth of a physical attacker, mixed in with the Agility and Dexterity growth of a rogue. He also has the ability "Hawke Blade" pre-learned. His LP is extremely high and his Magic is fair.
His high base stats make him the best starting character after Albert. To offset his powerful base stats, Hawke's Willpower and Compassion grow very slowly, making him a useless healer and his defense weak against magic-using enemies. Hawke can fulfill practically any combat role proficiently, but his high Dexterity and Agility make the rogue build the easiest for him to pull off.

Trivia[]
- During the "Ancient Text" quest, if you have a spare slot in your party, you can recruit Hawke and get the map for free. Otherwise you will have to pay him.
- During the "Pirate Invasion" quest, if the player uses the unique option to chase after Butcher, they will not be able to fight the boss, nor receive the typical rewards from the quest.
- Also, leaving the zone without taking the ship will not make it re-appear upon re-entry, as it is a one time opportunity
- Despite what some rumors say: Whenever the player beats Butcher during the quest or not, does NOT impact the ending that Hawke gets at the end
