Rouge (ルージュ Rūju?) is a playable character from SaGa Frontier. A magician from the Region called Magic Kingdom who is on a quest to learn different kind of magic and defeat his twin brother Blue. He has the gift for Realm Magic.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Rouge's appearances doesn't differ much from his twin, Blue. Rouge wears the same clothing as Blue, aside for them being colored red. The robe is also longer than the one Blue’s wearing.

One distinguishing feature between the two is the air style: whereas Blue has an high ponytail, Rouge keeps his air down.

Personality[]

Like his counterpart Rouge's focused on his quest for magic power. He has somewhat of a cold attitude toward others he encounters during his journey and his rudeness has him teleported out of Kylin's Paradise on his quest for Space Magic.[1]

Despite this he can be recruited by other characters and, in contrast to Blue's calm and ruthless attitude, he has a lighthearted disposition.[2]

According to the official canon on "The Essence of Saga Frontier", Rouge warms up to other during his quest and manages to get the Gift of Space magic without killing Kylin.

This is the first step in his change of attitude that will allow him to escape Hell by breaking his bonds after hearing the calls of his friends. Rouge had also begun warming up to them; his experiences in the outside world helped change his formerly cold personality for the better.[3]

Story[]

Blue's Quest[]

When Blue was attending his graduation ceremony, Rouge was elsewhere in the Magic Kingdom receiving the same orders to kill Blue. As a matter of fact, the Magic Kingdom has two institutes called the “Overt Academy” and “Covert Academy”. The existence of the Covert Academy is the kingdom’s most important secret—one of the twins was kept there and learned Realm Magic while the other did the same at the Overt Academy. And that’s why the Principal’s orders at the graduation ceremony are to “Kill your twin sibling!”[4]

If Blue loses the duel, Rouge absorbs him and completes his quest.

In the canon info presented in the book "The Essence of Saga Frontier" we know that Blue gets the gift of Light, Rune and Time Magic while Rouge gets Shadow, Arcane and Space Magic.[3]

The fateful duel is won by Rouge[5], who absorbs his other half Blue, merging the two personalities and unlocking the holy gift of Life Magic. This gift is subsequently used by Rouge to revive the previously defeat TimeLord[3] who was bested by Blue on his quest for Time Magic.

In the end, after returning to the Magic Kingdom, Rouge discovers that he and Blue were one on the same, his soul split in two to allow him to master all kinds of magic and become the Ultimate Magician. In doing so Rouge manages to hold back hell, defeating Hell's Lord and reuniting with his friends.[3]

Fuse's Quest[]

Interestingly enough, Rouge's canon win over Blue is confirmed on Fuse's Quest. Fuse has the chance to follow either Blue or Rouge by choosing between the dialogue in Luminous:

- Follow the voices for Blue's route;

- Search for Silence for Rouge's route.

This choice influences which one of the twins wins the duel and merges with the defeated one: first route Blue wins and second route Rouge wins.

At the very beginning Doll explicity and firmly orders Fuse to go search for Silence since he's being trapped in Omeble due to Fuse's wrong information. Rescuing Silence is then the canon option between the two routes, confirming what's written on "The Essence of Saga Frontier".

Other Quests[]

The main character meets Rouge in Luminous. He offers to join if the character is a human or a half-mystic.

Canon Ending[]

As stated on "Essence of SaGa Frontier"[6] Rouge emerges victorious in the fight with Blue and fulfill his duty as the last magician, defeating Monarch of Hell allowing the Magic Kingdom to seal the Abyss again.

After that Rouge departs travelling the regions again, saying his goodbyes to Fuse and keeping in touch with him.

Gameplay[]

Rouge can be recruited in Luminous, given the main character is a human or half-mystic.

Rouge is a strong offensive magic user, able to fight both mobs and bosses with the same proficiency.

Rouge can also spark all the Sword and M.Arts techs, like LifeSprinkler and DSC, with relatively ease. Coupled with the fact that the remastered 2021 game allows you to carry on skills on NG+, starting a quest with a main character that isn’t Blue and boosting Rouge, successively carrying the game data on the new cycle, almost guarantees Blue will always lose the duel.

After the duel, either Rouge or Blue can travel to Kyo and learn Mind Magic. Mind Magic is rather useful as Mind Heal is a decent self heal and Awaken can replace Soul Rune if the player decided to pursue the Arcane Quest.

Given the gameplay mechanic of the remastered version of carrying over skills and stats on NG+, the best possibile build for Rouge would be to grind on the other quest giving him DSC, Deflect/Optical Slash/Apathy, all while building his HP, Strenght and Vitality. Then playing Blue's quest and losing the duel to Rouge. This way Rouge will inherit stats for Magic attacks and Blue's JPs while retaining all of the other Phisycal stats. Equip Rouge with stats boosting equipments like Dullhahan Shield, Phantasm, Power Suit and accessories that nullifies ailments like Harmonium Earring, Pearl Heart, Emeth Tag and Tao-Tieh Pattern.

Now you can have fun casting Overdrive+Shadow Servant+Soul Rune+DSC and use the Snake Oil Glitch to potentially cast DSC 18times in a row for as much as 400k damage.

Optimal 1st Playthrough Build[]

Humans and Half-Mystics can recruit Rouge on Luminous. For example, playing Lute as the first scenario allows you to immediately recruit Rouge and choose between Light/Dark and Rune/Arcane Quest.

Despite Light Magic Quest granting him Gale Blast, high damaging AoE spell, embarking on Dark Magic Quest allows the player to recruit Silence early in the game and build him too. Moreover Shadow Servant plays a pivotal part in nuking almost everything in a couple of turns.

Given Rouge's unusual affinity to spark both Sword and Martial Arts, Shadow Servant will allow the player to unleash DSC 4 times per turn. How so? By recruiting TimeLord and using Time Twister to allows a character, in this case Rouge, to repeat a previous action.

You can double down with Soul Rune, drastically increasing his stats for the cost of 1 LP.

Here are some examples on how to build Rouge's skillset during your very first playthrough:

Comet Blade Trick[]

Since Rouge will leave the party if the player decides to visit the Magic Kingdom, it is possible to exploit this mechanic to get mutiple copies, up to 5, of the Comet Blade on the first playthrough.

Just go to Wakatu and visit the Blade Champer, if Gen has 60 or more WP he'll be granted a Comet Blade. Equip it to Rouge and leave. Select Magic Kingdom and Rouge will leave. Visiting Wakatu again will allow for another copy of the sword, since the game doesn't recognize it on your inventory. Every time you get a Comet Blade, go back to Luminous and let Rouge join, equip the sword and have him leave by selectin your next destination as the Magic Kingdom.

Rinse and repeat until Rouge has 4 Comet Blade equipped and do it one more time to get the 5th copy.
