—Battle Quote

Marigan (マリガン神 Marigan Shin?) is the Celestial who presides over military arts and war in SaGa Scarlet Grace. He is acknowledged as the patron deity of House Julanius―the House of Swords―and is usually portrayed as the leader of the Twelve Celestials. He appears as an optional boss during the Earth Serpent scenario, and as a major character for Taria's variation of the scenario.

His constellation depicts a series of armaments, and has the elemental affinity of Aes.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Marigan appears as a tall framed man of dark skin, white hair, and white eyes. He is mostly unclothed, only wearing a small white surcoat tied to his waist and some pieces of armor. His most notable characteristic, besides the red marks around his body, is the giant golden ring floating behind him, which he can use in battle as an improvised weapon.

Personality[]

Not much is seen of Marigan's personality in game. He's described as someone who likes accomplishing things by brute force, and as a somewhat egocentrical person with superiority tendencies.

Etymology[]

Marigan's name originates as a corruption of the name of the Celtic deity Morrigan, who is just like him, a deity who presides over war. His appearance took inspiration from the usual depiction of the Roman god of war Mars. Also, in Celtic mythology, Morrigan is depicted as the sister of Macha and Badb, the three being described as a trio of goddesses portraying a sole singular being.

Story[]

Overview[]

Marigan appears as an optional boss during the lategame variation of the Earth Serpent scenario for anyone but Urpina. After defeating all Earth Golems in Marchiam Yaxart, the Earth Serpent will emerge near Marigan's True Shrine. After a series of two encounters, Marigan will be battled through the special formation Elemental Salvo. Only in Taria's variation of the scenario, Marigan plays a major and clearer role in the story.

Urpina's Story[]

Marigan appears if the player has allied with Adill in the lategame variation of the Scarlet Shards scenario. After arriving to the Central Palace, Adill seeks guidance to Ei-Hanum through his Scarlet Shard by summoning the Infernal Aranea. This seemingly enrages Marigan and Macha, who descend to stop them, but are defeated by the soon-to-be imperial couple.

Leonard's Story[]

When looking for information about Ei-Hanum and the Scarlet Shard of Provincia Gradion, Leonard enters the Pixkimarigan and hears from one of its priests that the city was destroyed by Marigan in an act of preserving the order of the world. Some time after, at the Seventh Calamity, the Emperor was said to have received the guidance of Marigan, and when he defeated the Firebringer's avatar on the world, Marigan consequently shattered the star of the Firebringer. A title of Marigan is also revealed here, the "Blade of the Celestials."

Earth Serpent Scenario[]

Normal Events (Lategame and Leonard Only): In the process of defeating the Earth Serpent in Marchiam Yaxart, Marigan attacks the protagonist. Apparently, it was not Marigan who attacked, but rather an avatar that came to harvest the energy of the Spiritual.

For Taria (Lategame Only) (Urpina Route): Long before the events of the scenario, Marigan appears to have allied with Savnok. Somehow through the blood of Julanius, Marigan takes control of Urpina, and manipulates Taria and Antonius into defeating the Earth Serpents through the Emperor's Saw. After the Earth Serpent of Marchiam Yaxart has been defeated, Taria notes that Marigan has been absorbing the leftover energy of each Earth Serpent previously defeated. Marigan appears much later in Ei-Hanum where it is revealed that he plotted with Savnok to create a new order of gods, after absorbing the power of the Firebringer. After dealing with Savnok, Taria taunts Marigan, who leaves the body of Urpina and manifests to attack in response. Marigan is defeated, and unexpectedly his power is absorbed by the Firebringer, granting him another life. After an ironic turn of events, this was apparently the end of Marigan and his maniacal plan of becoming a greater god.

Minstrel's Tales[]

Marigan appears as the main character of one of the tales of the Minstrel, being the one who defeated an alleged massive infernal that stood between Provincia Cerenaif and Marchiam Ria.

Gameplay[]

Benison[]

"Marigan is a master of all weapons and has thriumphed over countless foes. Could the armaments that rain down from the heavens be weapons he claimed from those he conquered?"
—Description

Marigan's benison is called "Mania" and has a chance of activating when the enemy has a major advantage of HP and attack over the player's retinue. Once activated, thousands of sharp weapons descend from the sky, dealing a major amount of damage to any present enemy.

Information[]

Marigan
Type Energy
Element Aes
Ailment Weaknesses None

Techniques[]

  • Divine Preparation: Costs 1 BP. Selects a random Nameless Weapon to perform an specific technique.
    • Nameless Blade: Sonic Blade (Single target pierce-type attack. Can quell conditional techs)
    • Two Nameless Blades: Dual Cross Cut (Single target slash-type attack)
    • Two Nameless Blades: Dual Whirlwind (Four random-hitting slash-type attacks)
    • Nameless Axe: Maim (Single target slash-type attack. Inflicts low Speed Down)
    • Nameless Spear: Reaper (Blunt-type area attack)
    • No weapons: Raksha (Single target blunt/heat-type attack. Can inflict Frenzy)
    • No weapons: Divine Wrath (Single target typeless attack)

Strategy[]

Marigan's battle lives to his legacy. The battle consists of enduring the attacks of the Nameless Weapons and gradually damaging Marigan. Bringing a mage with Rain of Life is mandatory, as the battle can overextend due Marigan's high HP, leaving the retinue in shambles after a few number of turns. To reduce damage to the minimum, letting Marigan attack through a Nameless Spear or a single Nameless Blade is recommended; leaving no Nameless Weapons is devastating, as this will usually let Marigan activate Divine Wrath. As usual, Attack Down debuffs will prove useful.

Trivia[]

  • According to an early preview of the game, Marigan and Macha used to be part of a singular deity at one point, until a conflict arose between the siblings, leading to their separation.[1]

References[]

  1. Macha's description
