Sigfrei (シグフレイ Shigufurei?) is a character from SaGa Scarlet Grace. Once the former governor of Provincia Kei, Sigfrei's countless atrocities made him earn an execution sentence. However, before the execution order was complied, Sigfrei told his executioner that he would "return seven times to spread justice over the world." As unexpected, Sigfrei had indeed returned some time after his death.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Sigfrei is depicted as a young blonde-haired man clad in a green vest over a white robe. A notable difference between his in-game counterpart and his artwork depiction is that in-game the robe appears to be rather a set of two pieces: a shirt and long white pants. In combat he's usually seen wielding a Quarterstaff.

Personality[]

Hinting at his true identity, Sigfrei is a man who enjoys tricking people but also likes in part spread crucial truth within his lies. He also appears to be a rather cunning individual who constantly keeps track of the people that catch his interest.

Story[]

Overview[]

Sigfrei is a key point in the story, especially for Balmaint, appearing as the focus of one of the possible common scenarios for everyone but Leonard. Appearing in several regions spreading discord, Sigfrei aims to destroy what little remains of the world founded by the Celestials, in order to pave the way for the new world that is soon to birth after the fall of the Empire.

Urpina's Story[]

Sigfrei is found in several points within the world. Initially he can be found in Cerenaif where he's seen disguised as a priest preaching to the people that the sudden appearance of giant shrooms across the region means the final days are coming. Upon exposed about his fraud, he reacts surprised to seeing how Urpina could see through his scheme and promptly gets beaten up by Urpina and her retinue. Sigfrei manages to escape after a while, leaving Urpina wierded about the man's true intentions. After the incident Urpina is able to feel his uneasing presence in any region he is present. He can be found in Bicyniro where he's seen summoning fiends near Pescara to attack nearby towns; he can be found in Normi where he's seen spreading false rumors of fiends nearing the towns of Westdorf and Ostdorf, that are in fact guardian Spirituals of the region; and so on. Depending on the time of the scenario, Sigfrei is lastly found in Urbs Azhuacan preaching about the fall of the world of the Celestials. If the scenario is played early, then Sigfrei is found by Urpina in the temple of Marigan. Sigfrei tries striking doubt in Urpina's faith, asking her if Marigan has ever helped her or House Julanius; Urpina's resolve does not falter, and angered defeats Sigfrei.

However if the scenario is played as the final third one, then Sigfrei's voice guides Urpina to Ei-Hanum. In the depths of the earth, Sigfrei tries using Urpina as a sacrifice to summon the Firebringer; or her Ibex Ring if it's present, in her place. Depending on the scenario choices, Urpina's victory reveals that Sigfrei has been the avatar of the Firebringer, who intended to guide her to the Scarlet Grace in order to turn her into a guiding goddess of the new world order; Urpina refuses the Scarlet Grace, leaving Sigfrei devastated, who says that his defeat has been for nothing.

Leonard's Story[]

Sigfrei is encountered by Leonard in Castle Kohan in Provincia Kei, shortly after the story begins. Looking for information of Ei-Hanum, Leonard sees Sigfrei and asks him for information to which Sigfrei responds by telling him to look somewhere cold and far, suggesting Marchiam Normi. Sigfrei then later appears after Leonard visits the Central Palace of Azhuacan. Initially Leonard finds a dead end, but then Sigfrei makes appearance, offering to lend him a hand. This enrages Leonard, who beats him up, commenting after this that he finds him pretentious and annoying, as if he knew everything that was going in the world.

Taria's Story[]

Just as with Urpina, Sigfrei is found over several regions spreading discord; Sigfrei's interactions remain mostly the same. The difference is that if the scenario is played early, instead of ending in the temple of Marigan is Azhuacan, it ends in the temple of Macha.

The endgame version of the scenario has Sigfrei reveal to Taria that Ei-Hanum was the metropolis of his believers and the reason why he guided Taria there: he wanted her to join him in destroying the world of the Celestials and its founders, and eliminate all remaining Infernals and Spirituals, leaving him as the only protector god of humanity. Taria agrees that this would make things better if not simple, but it would make them exceedingly boring. Taria says that Sigfrei only wishes to do this for his own ego and that everyone else is fine with the world the way it is. Sigfrei as the Firebringer is eventually defeated, and whether Taria accepts or not the Scarlet Grace depends on the scenario choices.

Balmaint's Story[]

SSG Sigfrei 29

Sigfrei appears as an important character in Balmaint's story, being the main antagonist of the scenario. Beginning in Provincia Kei, the story starts with Sigfrei marching towards to be executed by Balmaint. Accused by his allies of several crimes, Sigfrei is ordered to be executed at last. Just before Balmaint claims his head, Sigfrei entrusts him a pendant as a sort of memorial; he also mentions that he will come back seven times to spread to justice. And so, Sigfrei dies and some time passes before rumors circulate about his sudden resurrection.

SSG Sigfrei 1

The new Sigfrei is apparently to be found somewhere in Provincia Maurehua, and so Balmaint and Arthur depart to investigate at once. When Balmaint and Arthur arrive, they are given a further insight on this new "Sigfrei," who happened to be some churro vender named Paul Hejjin that got struck by divine inspiration one day and ever since began calling himself Sigfrei. The aim of this Sigfrei was to build a tower to serve as focal point for praying to the Celestials, who according to him, hadn't been hearing the prayers of the people. As expected, the construction of the tower had brought imbalance to Provincia Maurehua, and soon the controlling powers started a battle between those that were supporting the building and those that resisted it. At the end of the feud it was discovered that Sigfrei had been using summoned Infernals to ensure nobody would disrupt the contruction of the tower; Sigfrei accepts his crime and once again walks to the executioner block.

SSG Sigfrei 3

Some time later new rumors circulate of the resurrection of Sigfrei, this time somewhere in Provincia Termina. Apparently, a cult was formed around this Sigfrei, with the followers lighting fire Infernal crests, likely with the intent to make him appear. The search eventually reveals that Sigfrei has been posing as one of the gate guards near Castle Knym, letting the deranged people pass to do whatever they want in Termina. Sigfrei once again acknowledges his wrong deeds and is executed. Some time passes and now Sigfrei has been reported to be lurking somewhere in the outer reaches of the world: Marchiam Numadica.

SSG Sigfrei 6

Sigfrei captured

As expected, Balmaint and Arthur arrive and begin the investigation. Sigfrei is not found initially, but some time after several relics are unearthed, people see him around capturing miners and offering them as sacrifice for calling forth the entrance of the mythical Urbs Aurea. Balmaint chases Sigfrei and finds him captured by one of the enraged miners, who demands the executioner to enact justice. Asking before claiming his head, Balmaint questions why Sigfrei murdered many miners; he simply answers by saying he wanted to recreate how the region had faced destruction early on ancient times. Sigfrei dies but his blood flows and awakens the Endbringer, the one who brought destruction to Marchiam Numadica originally. Most of the region is destroyed by a massive sandstorm, and so time passes before Sigfrei makes a new appearance...

SSG Sigfrei 7

Somewhere in the territory of House Gwynese, Sigfrei has been spotted wandering in search of something. He had been trying to instigate war between the reigning factions of the branched house, and also trying to manipulate Lord Gwynese into summoning a Sublime Spiritual to bring even more chaos, though apparently with the excuse of using it to restore House Gwynese's former glory. Sigfrei is finally found and captured in the Teach Na Macha, accused of desecrating the place by intending to steal several relics.

SSG Sigfrei 8

When brought to execution in the Grove of Silence, Sigfrei questions Balmaint's acting, intending to strike doubt in him; yet Balmaint does not falter and follows the orders of his superiors and drops the axe. The blood once again flows and somehow serves as a catalyst for summoning a Sublime Spiritual, albeit a corrupted one. Peace reigns after the Spiritual is defeated, yet it appears that Sigfrei's plan was to meddle with the Spiritual energy of the region for some reason. What could he be plotting? Once again Sigfrei disappears for a while...

SSG Sigfrei 9

Time passes and now rumors circulate about a new Sigfrei somewhere in the territory of House Julanius. Unexpectedly, he had been seen in two places: Provincia Cerenaif, and Marchiam Bicyniro. As usual, Sigfrei was seen spreading rumors after rumors in Bicyniro with the intent of disrupting the Spiritual Energy. Initially he is not found, and so the search takes Balmaint to Provincia Cerenaif where the new Sigfrei had been apparently half-revived as a common evil spirit monster.

SSG Sigfrei 11

The evil spirit Sigfrei takes a hold of Balmaint and forces him to make a vow. Now with the vow, Sigfrei torments Balmaint while also causing all sorts of anomalies in the region. The vow is eventually broken and a nearly-dead Balmaint, who was content with having not to execute him for the first time in a while, now turns over him and exorcises him. The evil spirit Sigfrei vanishes and so Balmaint returns to Kei.

SSG Sigfrei 13

Sometime after the execution of the evil spirit Sigfrei, the man has been reported to be wandering in the Northeast Boundary for some reason. As usual, Balmaint and Arthur depart to investigate and find him in an abandoned imperial outpost. Looking to work in mining prospects, Sigfrei had apparently abandoned his mischievery ways; opting to instead exploit the resources of the region, now that the Empire had collapsed and nobody was there to put regulations. Relieved again for not having to execute him, Balmaint leaves Sigfrei and explores the region.

SSG Sigfrei 17

Balmaint eventually takes interest in Sigfrei's words and becomes a foreman, developing several mines in the process. Having been tricked by Sigfrei, Balmaint notes how the mines had heavily disrupted the Spiritual balance of the region, and even theorizes that this could be affecting the whole world's energy. Balmaint quickly returns to the outpost and confronts him. Sigfrei is surprised to see Balmaint had realized the goal of his plan and once again tries convincing him that he was better fit for a higher role that the one of executioner. Unmoved by this apparent flattery, this time instead of an execution, Balmaint chooses to stop Sigfrei for once and for all by killing him. The trickster is defeated for once and for all apparently, and so peace returns to the Northeast Boundary.

SSG Sigfrei 19

However, sometime after the battle at the Northeast Boundary, Arthur reports that Sigfrei has been heard in Urbs Azhuacan preaching to the Holy Republic to take action to instill a stricter Celestial rule to unify the world. Sigfrei is eventually found in the Central Palace where the Celestials take notice of his words and send a pack of holimonts to eliminate him. The holimonts are defeated by Balmaint, and then Sigfrei guides him to the depths of the earth; to Ei-Hanum, where the Firebringer dwelled, and whose trial was said to grant godlike power.

SSG Sigfrei 25

Upon reaching the ancient city, Balmaint notes at last that Sigfrei has been the Firebringer the whole time, while Sigfrei reveals to Balmaint that the pendant he had entrusted him earlier was actually a Scarlet Shard. With the power of the pendant, the Firebringer could be finally resurrected again, but first dying a seventh death was required. Sigfrei attacks Balmaint and is defeated, and in his place the Firebringer revives. After a long battle, the Firebringer is defeated and reverts to his Sigfrei form, leaving as a parting gift the Scarlet Grace, the rumored godlike power. Defeated and apparently on his deathbed, Sigfrei asks Balmaint to use the Scarlet Grace's power to abolish the Celestials rule and create a better world for the humans. Thus, justice was delivered at last, and so the hopes of the Wicked One had been entrusted to somebody worthy.

Battle[]

Sigfrei is battled several times across all character's stories (except for Leonard). He's usually seen accompanied by two monsters of varying type according to the engagement (frogs, beastmen, hogs). In combat Sigfrei is totally invulnerable to physical attacks unless he's casting one of his spells, and depending on the battle he also has access to Blunt and Pierce interrupt techniques. Usually he shouldn't be a problem unless he's casting Snowstorm, which in combination with his high Intelligence and the low cast time of the spell, usually results in massive damage, if not outright annihilation of the whole retinue. The player should focus on defeating Sigfrei's monsters and try to aim for a United Attack, and when he's casting a spell, try to stun him using techs with high stunning rates such as Tumble. Another easy tactic for defeating him involves bringing atleast two club users, as this weapon in particular with its default attack can inflict distraction, raising the countdown time of his spells.

Other appearances[]

Imperial SaGa[]

Sigfrei appeared as an enemy character.

Romancing SaGa Re;univerSe[]

Sigfrei appeared as a boss in the Scarlet Pandemonium Melee! event. As usual he was battled several times, changing his lineup of minions with each encounter. This time, the interrupt techniques were adapted by nullifying the targeted damage and by counterattacking with a normal staff attack.

Sigfrei also appeared as an event boss for the Conquest SaGa FES event of 2022, dressed in more casual clothes and playing a guitar.

Trivia[]

  • Sigfrei has an unused retinue menu portrait, meaning he was planned to be playable at some point.
  • According to Arthur, the Sigfrei he used to know was a different person, implying the original Sigfrei was disposed and supplanted by the Firebringer in order to carry out his plans.
  • According to Arthur, Sigfrei hails from a different branch of Provincia Kei's previous governors.
