There are 79 playable characters in the game, although not all of them can be recruited at the same time. Some of them are exclusive to certain routes, while others can be recruited in all scenarios.

Subscenarios

Subscenarios occur when the player takes deviates from the intended route to find Sigfrei; or when Arthur tells Balmaint that they should hold searching Sigfrei for a while. Starting as early as completing the events in Maurehua, the first and only subscenario is of the Phoenix, while ending the events at Hibernia unlocks the Earth Serpent and Scarlet Shards subscenarios. As Balmaint can not travel to regions he hasn't visited yet, then the subscenarios function as a workaround for unlocking new regions. Subscenarios work as the usual scenario setting of the other protagonists, with the difference being that the progress is only done within the regions the player has visited, except for the triggering point, which is the way it serves for unlocking a new region.
