The Phoenix (不死鳥 Fushichō?) is one of the Sublime Spirituals from SaGa Scarlet Grace and a major character found during the progression of the game, acting as the starting point of a common scenario for some of the main characters.

It appears to be one of the oldest known Spirituals of the world, with hearsay of its appearances going as back as before the founding of the Empire some 1000 years ago. It also appears to have a sort of close connection to the Firebringer, leading people to fear it and even claim it to be one of the strongest Sublime Spirituals.

Scenario[]

The Phoenix is the main objective of the scenario of the same name. It appears in one of two possible regions, where it descends near to the protagonist. The Phoenix's descent leads to a battle where after defeat it drops a single feather with its memories. The scenario has two variations depending on when it is played by the protagonist:

  • First Variation (Midgame)
    • For Urpina: After clearing the initial scenario of the Earth Serpent.
    • For Balmaint: As soon as the events of Provincia Maurehua are cleared, or after clearing the events of Provincia Hibernia.
  • Second Variation (Lategame)
    • For Urpina: After the second scenario has been cleared.
    • For Balmaint: After clearing a subscenario other than the Phoenix's one.

The Phoenix can be found in the following locations:

After acquiring the Phoenix's feather, the scenario consists of chasing the memories of the bird in search of its egg. The scenario will end after finding its egg in the Southeast Boundary (Midgame), or it will lead to the final boss fight with the Firebringer (Lategame) (except for Balmaint).

Story[]

Overview[]

The Phoenix is the focal point of the Phoenix Scenario, and for Taria during her initial scenario. It appears from region to region, dragging down fiends and people obsessed with acquiring its "relics." The objective of the scenario is finding the Phoenix's egg through one the visions of its feather dropped after defeating it the first time. After the player locates the egg, the Phoenix emerges and battles them through a rather unique style of engagement.

Taria's Story[]

SSG Phoenix 5

The Phoenix appears

The Phoenix is Taria's main objective during her initial scenario. It initially appears in Provincia Hibernia, and soon catches the potter's glance after she deduces the bird might be linked to the warping of her work. Taria's first thought was repelling the Phoenix, which leads her to get some help from the nearby town of Schut. The Phoenix is battled and easily dies without much resistance, leaving Taria's allies perplexed. The potter explains to them that the Phoenix was nearing the end of its life cycle, meaning it had laid an egg somewhere. Thus, Taria and the Killers depart from Provincia Hibernia to locate the egg.

SSG Phoenix 4

The new Phoenix is born

Their quest takes them across several regions of the world, where they witness all sort of erratic happenings linked to the Phoenix's Spiritual energy, such as the sudden increase of monster activity. The egg is located faraway in a corner of the Southeast Boundary, but as they lacked the means of reaching it, Taria and the Killers reach for a ship in Marchiam Bicyniro and the favor of the Spirituals in Marchiam Yaxart. The egg is found in Corner Isle, where it hatches and a gives birth to a new Phoenix. The new Phoenix "attacks" Taria's group, but it actually uses them to amass ignis energy of its egg. After it absorbs enough energy, the Phoenix departs, turned once again into the fiery Sublime Spiritual of Ignis. Taria assumes the Phoenix had chose her to perform the revival ritual; something that is confirmed by Francis in Provincia Gradion.

Leonard's Story[]

SSG Phoenix Leonard 1

The Phoenix, with the Earth Serpent

The Phoenix appears to Leonard in several locations, beginning in Provincia Kei. Unlike with other protagonists, the Phoenix doesn't play a major role in his story; instead it acts as a miniboss or as a quest marker. It ultimately attains its revival by an unbeknown Leonard in the Southeast Boundary. Alternatively, the Phoenix can be found sealed in Inferus Azhuacan for some reason, if it was not battled earlier.

Phoenix Scenario[]

Provincia Jusitania[]

Starting Region: The Phoenix lands near the protagonist, prompting them to approach the legendary bird. The Phoenix attacks the protagonist and is defeated, albeit easily. A feather is dropped, granting the protagonist the ability to view some of the memories of the bird. According to hearsay, the Phoenix's only appears when it is approaching the end of its life; leaving an egg somewhere else in preparation for its rebirth. The protagonist begins the search for the egg, knowing it might reward them with eternal life or so-so.

For Leonard: Leonard witnesses the flaming chicken landing near the coast of Misery. Upon arriving there, Leonard finds a feud between people from the Grumon Queendom and pirates from the region. The pirates are driven away, but soon return with beastmen allies. The pirates are defeated again, but their grudge allows them to return from the dead. The pirates are exorcized, leaving the people from Grumon to finish their search. Nothing is found, besides some remains of hamaguri clams. Looks like the Phoenix just made an stop for a quick meal.

Mare Ilfee[]

Starting Region (Balmaint Only): Taking a break from chasing Sigfrei, Balmaint arrives to the Mare Ilfee, where he is greeted by the flaming bird right after undocking in New Wise. Curious about the nature of the creature, Balmaint and Arthur approach it, but are attacked on the spot. The Phoenix is effortlessly defeated, dropping a single feather; Balmaint picks the feather and recognizes its ability of storing the memories of the creature. Guided by this, Balmaint takes pursuit of the Phoenix and its egg.

Midgame and Lategame: Coming from Provincia Cerenaif, the Phoenix made an stop inside the Middle Range Lighthouse to build a nest. Hearing of this, the Seafarers took control of the lighthouse, forbidding anyone to enter, claiming that it was dangerous inside. It was dangerous indeed, as many monsters had made the place their own nest. The protagonist arrives to the region and helps Lewis Darling in fixing the lighthouse. After clearing the fiend mess, the nest is found to be empty. No egg again to be found, the search continues.

Provincia Cindrea[]

Midgame: The Phoenix landed near Imhokiel Dam, attracting all sorts of fiends. Reports come that fiends and people have amassed inside the dam in search of one of the Phoenix's curios, leading to soldiers of House Erakleos to approach the dam. A battle ensues between House Erakleos and those that were pursuing for the Phoenix's relic. The protagonist sneaks into the dam, thinking its nest might be inside there, but only finds fiends and more fiends. The fiends are defeated by the protagonist, while the relic appears to have been stolen by somebody else.

Lategame: The Phoenix lands near Imhokiel Dam, but the caused turmoil is so huge that the dam appears to be nearing a collapse. After the fiends are defeated, the dam actually collapses, opening a path to the golden city of Ur-Saqqara. The relic was nowhere to be found, and responsability of the happening is placed on the protagonist; Duchess Irene of House Erakleos vows to keep a close watch on the protagonist after the incident.

Provincia Maurehua[]

Midgame (Urpina Only): The Phoenix lands somewhere on the center of the region, leaving a nest behind. A crowd gathers, and a man named Paul Hejjin takes the nesting place as an indication for building a praying tower. Fiends are seen near the nest and are eliminated by Urpina, which allows the tower's construction to begin.

Lategame: The Phoenix lands somewhere on the center of the region...

  • If the Prayer Tower was built: The Phoenix lands on the top and leaves a nest. The protagonist climbs the tower, hoping to find the Phoenix's egg, but rather finds the whole place swarmed by fiends. Upon reaching the top, the nest is found empty, leaving the protagonist disappointed.
  • If the Prayer Tower was not built: The Phoenix left a nest somewhere on the center of the region. The protagonist approaches the nest, but finds it swarmed by ignis Spirits. The egg is not found, and so the protagonist leaves the region.

Southeast Boundary[]

Midgame Only: The protagonist finally localizes the Phoenix's egg resting place: Corner Isle. However, needing of a ship to arrive there, they return to Marchiam Bicyniro, where they're helped by a woman named Kumi. Crossing to the Southeast Boundary proves impossible due the massive maelstrom in Marchiam Bicyniro; and so the protagonist decides to embark on a pilgrimage to Provincia Kei to earn the favor of either the Celestials or the Spirituals, in order to cross the watery behemoth.

For Leonard: Seeing from afar the Phoenix landing on an small islet, Leonard searches for a way of reaching the ominous landing site. On his journey across the region, he comes across an old woman who helps him reach the islet by means of teleporting... until they're soon attacked by a woman with a certain obsession. Leonard beats her up for interrupting the conversation so abruptly. The old woman decided teleporting him to the islet for no cost.

Now on the islet, Leonard finds a massive egg; Elisabeth wonders about what to do with such a huge egg; and the woman that had attacked them earlier was also there. Suddenly the egg begins to crack, and the Phoenix's spawn is given birth. Leonard offered the woman join them, in case something was to happen. Whether Leonard decided to leave the creature alone, or fight it, is something that only he knows. The Phoenix departs, but the youngsters are left stranded on the islet. The old woman that had helped them earlier arrives, offering them the way back to mainland, and all for the price of a singular Scarlet Shard. Tired of an already troublesome day, Leonard the Renegade attacks her. earning her respect somehow, returning to the mainland as last.

Provincia Kei[]

Midgame and Lategame: The Phoenix landed near the Great Arch a while ago, leaving behind one of its treasured "relics." A man found the relic but lost his life after pulling a mandragora near the stone arc. The protagonist arrives and follows the vision of the feather, finding on the way the corpse of the man. The relic was found split in two, with its other half being in possession of members from a gang of Nangoon.

The protagonist was being watched from afar by someone from Nangoon, thinking they were envoys of a gang leader from Castle Kohan. The protagonist is guided to a mountain hut to "complete" the relic, but finds themself within a gang fight; the relic was being used as exchange token for the life of a girl from Castle Kohan. The protagonist defeats the gang member of Nangoon, frees the girl, and completes the relic. Yet, the egg was nowhere to be found, and so the search continues.

Marchiam Yaxart[]

Midgame: The Phoenix landed near a cave to a shrine dedicated to Tejedura, leaving behind one of its precious "relics." People have once again hurried to claim their treasure. It is finally revealed why these things are so sought-after: they can be used as offerings to earn the blessings of a Celestial. The protagonist arrives to the Tejedura Shrine and hears of the turmoil; pilgrims of Tejedura were sent without any sort of protection to retrieve the relic. This angers the protagonist, who decides to go help the pilgrims. The relic is retrieved and the pilgrims are saved; however, word spreads of the sudden disappearance of the relic, and so the people from Marchiam Yaxart begin a witch-hunt to localize the one who stole the thing. The protagonist is sure to have received a divine blessing, and so makes way to the maelstrom of Marchiam Bicyniro.

Lategame: The Phoenix landed somewhere near Imhokiel Gate. The protagonist is guided into a shrine that appears to have been dedicated to Macha. In search for the relic, or the nest, they find themselves battling several fiends and the holimont of Macha. At the depths of the shrine, Macha descends and attacks them for no reason; yet what remained of the Phoenix's energy is used to strengthen the retinue, granting them a huge boost to their stamina. Macha is defeated and seemingly vanishes, and so the protagonist retreats from the old shrine after the odd engagement.

Marchiam Ria[]

Midgame: The Phoenix's landing on the Cocoon turns the atrocity into a fiery ball. Its protector is seen panicking, while people are entering to see if the egg was to be found there. Surprisingly, people that entered the thing turned into Spirituals for some reason. The Spirituals are dispatched, but the cocoon remains a fiery ball.

Lategame: The Phoenix's landing on the Cocoon caused the thing to turn red. As usual, people are running rampant in search for the egg, and so enter the Cocoon, causing them to turn into Spirituals. A single Ignis Spirit attacks the protagonist but is easily eliminated. The protagonist wanders the region in search of clues on how to revert to normal the Cocoon. People are acting even weirder than usual, and so the protagonist decides to enter the thing to get rid of its fiery disruption. Inside is found a Crimson Beast, which after being slain, turns the Cocoon to its normal self. The protagonist leaves the region to continue their quest.

For Leonard: The Phoenix lands on the Cocoon and turns the thing into a red ball. Leonard and Elisabeth arrive to closely inspect the atrocity. The guardian of the Cocoon greets them and explains them of the nature of the Cocoon; a fae descends to mature into its true self but... It turns into an Ignis Spirit, leaving horrorized the guardian. Leonard dispatches the Ignis Spirit and decides to leave; the Cocoon remains burning.

Provincia Termina[]

Urpina Only: The Phoenix lands near a mountain, and as usual attracts daft people to its landing site. The infamous crest-burners are seen gathering in the area in pursuit of the Phoenix's power. Urpina arrives and hears of their plot: acquire the Phoenix's power and summon an Infernal. Naturally, Urpina beats them up some sense and departs to continue her quest.

Southeast Boundary (Revisited)[]

Urpina (Midgame): At last Urpina crosses to Corner Isle and finds the giant Phoenix's egg... or does she?. Once again, the egg was nowhere to be found, And so, there was still one place yet to be visited: Urbs Azhuacan. Could the egg be finally there?

For Balmaint: At last the executioner reaches the legendary Corner Isle, finding the massive nest of the Phoenix, holding an equally massive egg. Arthur wonders of a way of carrying the thing, until it begins to hatch. The Phoenix's spawn emerges and attacks them; the battle overextends and the Phoenix retreats after having absorbed ignis energy. The Phoenix was gone, and so was Arthur's dream of receiving eternal life. The duo departs to continue the chase of a certain elusive cryptid...

Urbs Azhuacan[]

Urpina (Midgame): Urpina returns to the imperial city after several days of the incident regarding the Earth Serpent. Upon arriving, she finds soldiers of the Holy Republic gathered around Marigan's temple, and with them her father as well. The Phoenix had laid an egg inside the temple, causing fiends to invade the sorroundings. Urpina is tasked with getting rid of the egg and the fiends, in exchange for ther father. The Phoenix's spawn is given birth and retreats after a long battle, leaving Urpina to wonder of her seemingly pointless quest. Task clear at last, Maximius is freed from the Holy Republic, and returns with his daughter to home.

Urpina (Lategame): Guided by the feather, Urpina reaches the Central Palace, where she finds...

  • Scarlet Shards (Midgame) (Ibex Ring): The egg at last. The egg hatches and gives birth to a new Phoenix. The Phoenix retreats and then the palace suddenly starts to descend.
  • Scarlet Shards (Midgame) (No Ibex Ring): Nothing at all. It appears the creature and its power have been absorbed by somebody else...
  • Sigfrei (Midgame): Still nothing. The palace descends, and Urpina is suddenly attacked by Savnok and Sigfrei.

The descent reaches an end, and Urpina arrives to the city of Ei-Hanum, where she witnesses the revival of the Firebringer. Knowing of the danger the old god posed, Urpina redies for her final battle.

For Balmaint: The Phoenix was last seen descending towards Shaams' temple. Perhaps this was all the guidance of Shaams? Balmaint and Arthur arrive to the temple and find the Phoenix's egg at last. Suddenly the egg hatches and gives birth to the new Phoenix. The Phoenix retreats after some time of fighting against the executioner and his friend; leaving Arthur saddened for earning nothing after such a long quest. Dreams are fleeting by nature, said Balmaint, and so they returned to Provincia Kei to prepare for searching Sigfrei.
