The Monster transformation system is a popular yet complicated mechanic that allows a Monster type party member to absorb unique abilities from defeated enemy monsters.
To get a specific monster, both a correct set of abilities and HP value are needed. For example, to get the elusive Snowfolk morph, Frigid Smash and Frost are needed, but without the correct max HP, the player will always end up with an Iceworm. Snowfolk requires a Max HP higher than 995, making that morph one the rarest forms achievable.
Max HP is not always required, but the suggestion is it should be as high as possible so lots of unique abilities are to be absorbed.
The following pages go in detail about the requirements for rare/special monsters and a full list of obtainable ones.
Transformation Process[]
When a player monster absorbs a skill at the end of battle, several steps take place to determine which form the monster takes. The chart below only shows a rough flow of the complex transformation process.
Skills Absorption[]
The key factor for triggering a monster's morph. Knowing how abilities are absorbed allows for a deeper understanding of the system.
First of all, one should not be fooled by the skills used by a monster foe in battle: you cannot absorb all of the abilities they use against your party. Even when the same monsters defeated early on in the playthrough start using new abilities later in the game, the pool from which the player may absorb skills remain the same. Absorbing the same skill from different monsters doesn't affect the type of Monster your character ends up with.
Basic Rules of Skill Absorption[]
- A max of 4 skills can be absorbed from an enemy monster;
- Each enemy monster has a fixed absorption rate. This means the same skill could be easily absorbed from one enemy monster rather than another;
- Absorbing a skill for the first time increases Max HP by 4 points.
When talking about increasing your Max HP by 4 points for each unique ability absorbed, the player must take in account that Monster HP varies by form. For example: if Thunder in his starting Ogre form has 167 Max HP and absorbs the unique Beak skill from a monster, he will turn into an Axebeak with roughly 457 Max HP. This means that if Axebeak Thunder absorbs a non unique skill and reverts back to his starting Ogre form, his Max HP would be 171 and not 167. This can be confusing, but it becomes evident when absorbing multiple unique enemy skills without triggering your Monster's transformation.
Form Creation[]
If skill absorption is successful and the player doesn't meet specific requirements for a special transformation, Monster Skills are then rearranged into six categories:
- Head
- Arm
- Leg
- Body
- Breath
- Magical
The image above shows how skill are arranged in choosing a Monster Form; a Monster's previous form has no impact in the form creation; it is only based on the type of skills equipped at the moment. By absorbing several monster skills, it’s common to be in a situation where none of the equipped skills correspond to a specific category. In that case, the part is considered to be empty as seen in the Breath slot in the form above, indicated by a long dash —. The remastered version allows for an easier understanding, since every skill has an icon depicting which category it is linked to.
The above image helps to clarify which skills the player should replace to get the desired monster form. Charming Gaze is [Head], Blade is [Arm], Trample is [Leg], Deathsynthesis and Stampede are [Body], Magnetic Storm and Cyclone are [Magical] and, finally, Acid is [Breath].
How Priority Works When Multiple Skills Match The Same Body Part[]
If more than one skill corresponds to the same body part, like for example Magnetic Storm and Cyclone on the previous paragraph, only one of the skills is assigned to the form. This is based on its priority, as shown in the image below. Beware, this applies only when comparing parts from the same category! In the same image below, FireBreath has higher priority than Blade, but one is Breath category and the other is Arm category, so this doesn't influence the transformation process.
In the same image above, Fang and BoltBreath have lower priority than Horn and FireBreath. Those two skills aren't applied to the model.
Resulting Monster Form[]
Each Monster form, except for special ones, has a precise set of skills required to achieve the desired morph. Below is an example for Skullasaurus, where each body part has specific abilities needed to change your monster into the desired form; body parts with a long dash — can be assigned any skill, since those aren't required for the form.
If a Monster's model matches a specific configuration, the Monster successfully morphs into the desired form.
Absorption of a skill triggers the body type search, based on a scale of strength among the potential monsters. First a check is made to see if there are stronger bodies available (as seen on up arrow 1 in the image below). If there are no stronger body types, the search is made for weaker bodies (as seen on down arrow 2 in the image below). When the search is finally over, the monster either transforms or remains in the same form.
Body search starts from the character's Max HP; the higher the value before skill absorption, the stronger the body configuration for searching the index. This means it will be easier to morph into a stronger Monster.
As stated in the Skills Absorption paragraph, the player's Monster Max HP is calculated with a simple formula: current Monster's initial HP + number of unique absorbed skills.
Monster Forms With Multiple Body Configurations[]
Some Monsters have multiple body configurations, meaning that a player can get the same Monster with a different set of skills and HP.
For example, a Wyvern has three body configurations where HP Req indicates the amount of Max HP needed before ability absorption; it should ideally be below or very close to the fixed amount. As per the image below, if we look at the middle chart depicting a possible Wyvern model, if the player has PoisonNeedle assigned to the leg slot, but a Max HP over 470 before ability absorption, the resulting form will be that of a Butch. This happens since the index starting point changes based on Max HP value. In this case the search cannot find a Wyvern body.
